Determine the Maximum Value for a Scenario Guidance for Casio ClassPad

Find a maximum value for the scenario.

The design of a rectangular pool calls for a perimeter of feet.  What would be the measure of the length and the width that would create the maximum surface area?

Step 1

Click anywhere in ClassPad to bring up the ClassPad menu.

Select the Graphing tool in ClassPad.

Step 2

Select the functions tool at the bottom of the graphing window.

Step 3

Enter the equation that represents the area of the pool.

You may need to change the graph scales or scroll to zoom out to better view the graph of the equation.

Step 4

Click on the graph to reveal key points. Click on the highest point. What is the maximum surface area?

Step 5

Open the table for the function. Add higher -values into the table. How could you know, without looking at the graph, that the point you entered in the table was the highest?
