Development Unit: Telling Stories with Film

Everyone has their favorite movie or their carefully curated list of top 10 films of all time. Why do we love these movies and rewatch them time and time again? In this unit, we will explore the art of storytelling through film. We will learn how screenwriting, choices made by directors and performers, visual effects, music, and sounds are used to entertain viewers, invoke strong emotions, create sensory experiences, raise thought-provoking questions, and make statements about society. We will view and analyze two full-length features as well as multiple film clips. We will also read film reviews and learn the art of film criticism. To demonstrate our understanding and analysis, we will develop a concept for our own original feature film and create a “pitch packet” that presents our ideas in the manner of professional filmmakers.
