Lesson Goals
Can I generate ideas, positions, and solutions to problems?
Can I brainstorm creatively, present my thoughts clearly, and listen to my peers’ perspectives to generate new ideas?

Activity 1: Present – Write
We will present our ideas to the entire class to get feedback about our topics, helping us refine our central research questions to make them clearer, richer, and more relevant.
Step 1
Review your Learning Log entry from the previous lesson to recall and solidify your personal speaking goal for this presentation.
During the presentation, each team will do the following:
summarize your area of investigation on an Exploring a Topic Tool
present your refined Central Research Question and new inquiry questions
use your Potential Sources Tools to present the sources you have identified to date that led to your team’s decision to pursue your question
As you present, be sure to do the following:
share the overarching question or problem that will guide your research
invite the class to ask questions about anything that is unclear
invite the class to comment on which aspects of your Central Research Question are most interesting to them, or the most problematic
write down specific questions from the class that might help guide your research
When another team is presenting, do the following:
listen intently to their Central Research Question
use the Central Research Question Checklist to ask questions about the team’s questions
candidly and respectfully share your questions and responses
Choose one person from your team to write down all of the ideas that come up, collecting valuable feedback from your peers on whether your approach is clear, interesting, and viable.
Step 2
Take turns presenting in groups.
Step 3
Individually, reflect on your portion of the presentation and assess yourself for progress toward the speaking goal you set.
