Development Unit: Antigone

In the play Antigone, Greek playwright Sophocles crafts a timeless tale of his central character, Antigone, a woman determined at all costs to prove loyalty to her family. Through analyzing Sophocles’s play, as translated by Robert Fagles, we will explore the following question: To whom or what do we owe our loyalty? We will examine the factors that lead each of the two main characters, Creon and Antigone, to defend their values and beliefs, and make their decisions. We will also analyze related arguments to further our understanding of both argumentation and the topics of Antigone. Our work will culminate with an essay in which we write an argument regarding which character is justified in their decisions.
