Section 5: Overview

Culminating Task

We will prepare to write, develop, and publish the Culminating Task argumentative essay. We will reflect on the understanding we have built through the unit texts by engaging in a reflective class discussion.

  • Lesson 1:

We will prepare to write our Culminating Task by breaking down the prompt and organizing the information and tools we have gathered and used throughout the unit. We will also review our previous activities and begin gathering evidence, as we move toward developing a thesis statement in the following lesson.

  • Lesson 2:

We will locate and organize evidence to support our central claims and essays’ thesis statements.

  • Lesson 3:

We will complete the first drafts of our final arguments, develop introductions that describe our positions to our audiences and conclusions that leave our readers with our final thoughts or suggested responses to the prompt our essays discuss.

  • Lesson 4:

Using peer and self-review, we will revise our arguments to ensure we have included all the requirements of the Culminating Task.

  • Lesson 5:

We will complete final revisions of our argumentative essays, considering grammar and usage issues.

  • Lesson 6:

We will share our arguments with other students, reflect on what we learned, and preview possible connections between this unit and the Grade 10 Application Unit.

  • Lesson 7:

In a culminating activity, we share the knowledge we have gained and the connections we have made by reading our independent reading texts.
