Section 6: Overview

Culminating Task

Like Lin-Manuel Miranda, we researched individuals from the Founding Era of America, using primary and secondary sources. We then created original songs using key words and phrases from the primary sources. We will write personal essays, in which we reflect on the creative processes we engaged in when creating our original song lyrics and explain our choices regarding the incorporation of primary and secondary sources. We will then reflect on the unit’s Central Question.

  • Lesson 1:

We will introduce the section by reviewing the Central Question and the Framing Questions. We will also deconstruct the Culminating Task and begin to respond to the following question: How does the use of primary and secondary sources affect modern storytelling?

  • Lesson 2:

We will begin planning and drafting our Culminating Task essays.

  • Lesson 3:

We will finish drafting the Culminating Task essay and begin the revision process.

  • Lesson 4:

We will peer review and revise our controlling idea in our Culminating Task essays.

  • Lesson 5:

We will submit and reflect on our Culminating Task essay and conclude the unit by engaging in a whole-class discussion about the unit’s Central Question. We will also discuss Culminating Task topics that relate to the unit and identify possible pathways to explore for the Application Unit.

  • Lesson 6:

In a culminating activity, we share the knowledge we have gained and the connections we have made by reading our independent reading texts.
