Lesson 5

We will prepare to analyze a film adaptation of the book by determining the meaning of various cinematic techniques. We will present our slides on cinematic techniques and take notes on the presentations by our peers.

Activity 1: Read – Write

We will learn about cinematic techniques in order to prepare for watching and analyzing the film adaptation of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

In the next lesson, we will view select scenes from a film adaptation of the book. In preparation of your analysis of the film, your group will be assigned two of the terms below:

Camera Shots

  • long shot

  • mid-shot

  • close-up

Camera Movement

  • tracking shot

  • panning

Camera Angles

  • eye level

  • low angle

  • high angle

Editing

  • wipes

  • cutaways

Sound

  • diegetic sound

  • non-diegetic sound

Music

  • film score

Lighting

  • high key

  • low key

For each term, create a one-slide presentation that includes the following:

  • the term and its definition

  • the term used in a sentence

  • an explanation of how directors commonly use the device

  • a link to a example of the technique being used

Activity 2: Present

We will present our cinematic techniques to the class to review the elements of film.

Present your slides to the class. As other groups are presenting, take notes on the key terms and definitions, paying particular attention to how directors use these techniques in film.
