Lesson 5

We will work with a partner to review our essays for grammar and clarity. We will use our partner’s feedback to make final edits to our work.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I revisit, refine, and revise my understanding, knowledge, and work based on discussions with others and feedback and review by myself and others?

  • Can I apply correct and effective syntax, usage, mechanics, and spelling to communicate ideas and achieve intended purposes?

  • Can I use effective formatting, style, and citations to present ideas for specific audiences and purposes?

Activity 1: Read – Write

We will proofread a partner’s essay for errors in grammar and conventions.

Exchange your paper with a different partner. Read through your partner’s draft as a proofreader. Look for the following:

  • errors in grammar or usage

  • citation errors

  • any confusing or unclear sentences or ideas

  • verb tense issues

Essays should be written in the present tense. For example, "Skloot depicts this person as… Skloot presents the person’s perspective through…”

Do not correct any errors. Simply circle them or write a quick note in the margin about a possible issue. If you are unsure it is an error but think it may be, circle it anyway. It is the writer’s job to go through the corrections and change anything that needs editing.

Read through the essay a final time and look for a combination of long and short sentences. If the writer used too many sentences of the same length, add a comment in the margin to encourage them to vary their sentence length.

Activity 2: Write

We will edit our essays.

Edit your essay for final publication. Use the notes from your partner to read and revise your essay. Be sure to verify you have addressed each criterion on the Culminating Task Checklist. As a final check, read the essay from the last sentence to the first as a way to find errors that you might normally miss.

Submit your final polished essay to your teacher.
