Lesson 11

We will respond to the task questions by writing a multiparagraph response that explains our overviews of the particular ethical issues or questions we have identified, reviews various societal perspectives on the issue, and supports an evidence-based claim about how one or more ethical approaches might be applied to respond to the issue.

Lesson Goals

Reading and Knowledge

  • Compare and Connect: How well do I make connections and comparisons among ethical perspectives, approaches, and issues within the public health realm of vaccinations?
  • Delineate Argumentation: How well do I identify the claims, reasoning, and evidence used to develop arguments and explanations about vaccinations?

Writing

  • Form Claims: How well do I develop and clearly communicate a meaningful and defensible claim about the ethics of mandating vaccinations that represents valid, evidence-based analysis?
  • Develop Ideas: How well do I use examples, evidence, and quotations from unit texts to develop and support my claim about the ethics of mandating vaccinations?

Activity 1: Read

We will review the expectations for the Section Diagnostic.

Access the Section 2 Diagnostic Checklist, and reread the task questions and prompt, which you analyzed in the previous lesson.

Review the specific expectations listed after the task prompt.

Think about how you have prepared to meet these expectations by identifying an ethical issue and question about vaccinations, deciding on an ethical approach to use in addressing the question, forming a claim that suggests a response and solution, and gathering evidence from unit texts.

As you approach the writing task, consider using the list of expectations as an outline for organizing your writing.

Activity 2: Write

Using the materials we have prepared and gathered, texts from the unit, and the task expectations, we will draft our response to the Section Diagnostic.

Draft a response to the Section 2 Diagnostic by writing a well-developed response to the following questions:

  1. What is a key ethical issue or question surrounding the mandating of vaccinations to prevent widespread infectious diseases?

  2. What ethical approaches should we apply to this issue?

  3. What solutions or consequences might the approaches lead to?

In your response, be sure to do the following:

  • Identify and explain a key ethical issue surrounding the mandating of vaccinations.

  • Summarize what you have learned about ethics, public health, and the various perspectives on the issue.

  • Present and support an evidence-based claim about how an ethical approach to decision making might be applied to the issue.

  • Propose a response and solution to the issue based on the ethical approach you have identified.

  • Cite evidence from at least two sources that explains and substantiates your perspective and claim.

Activity 3: Read – Write

Using the section 2 diagnostic checklist, we will review and revise our responses to the task questions.

Review the expectations you will be evaluated on, as found in the Section 2 Diagnostic Checklist. Read your response, checking that you have done each of the things listed on the checklist.

Next, read through the criteria found on the checklist. Ask yourself how well you have met those criteria.

Identify one or two major things you want to improve on in your draft, and make revisions before submitting your response to your teacher.

Activity 4: Write

We will reflect on our work on the Section Diagnostic and assess how prepared we are for the Culminating Task.

Step 1

Choose at least three of the questions below and respond to them in your Learning Log:

  1. How well did you take necessary action to prepare for the task?

  2. What went well for you during the completion of this task?

  3. What did you struggle with during the completion of this task? How did you push through that struggle?

  4. How well did you actively focus your attention during this independent task?

  5. How well did you develop and use an effective and efficient process to maintain workflow during this task?

  6. What would you do differently during the next Section Diagnostic?

Step 2

Review your Culminating Task Progress Tracker. Think about all you have learned and done during this section of the unit. Evaluate your skills and knowledge to determine how prepared you are for the Culminating Task.

  • Add or refine any skills and content knowledge required for the Culminating Task.

  • Evaluate how well you are mastering skills and knowledge required for the Culminating Task.

Step 3

Review the Central Question of the unit:

How do we balance the common good with individual rights and personal liberty?

Respond to the following question in your Learning Log:

  1. How has your response to the question evolved, deepened, or changed?
