Lesson 6

We will present or share our final product with other students in the class, reflect on what we have learned, and think about possible research avenues for the Application Unit.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I use language and strategies to accomplish my intended purpose in communicating?

  • Can I think about and evaluate personal development?

Activity 1: Present

If time allows, we will use our final pitch packets to pitch our movies to a group of students who will role-play as a potential producer, studio, or financier.

Form a review team of three to four students, and set up roles for each student to play in a movie pitch process:

  • writer

  • director

  • pitch person

  • potential producer or studio executive

  • potential financiers or investors

Discuss what your group is looking for in new movie ideas.

In turn, take the role of pitch person and pitch your movie idea, using your pitch packet for support.

As each person pitches their idea, decide as a group if you are ready to invest in the movie idea, or if you need to see more before you make a decision. Have fun!

Activity 2: Discuss

We will engage in a class discussion to share our understanding of how we use film to tell stories and consider questions we might further explore. This will help us express our understanding of the topic and concepts of the unit and prepare for the Application Unit.

Engage in a class discussion of filmmaking and what you have learned in the unit, guided by questions such as the following:

Central Question:

How do we tell stories with films?

Questions:

  1. How did the movies and the writing techniques we practiced in this unit help you understand or think about the Central Question?

  2. When you created your own movie for the Culminating Task, what new insights did you gain about the Central Question?

  3. What do you still want to learn or understand about movie storytelling?

  4. Was there any particular topic or movie that captured your attention? Why?

  5. In the films you watched during this unit, which filmmakers, themes, or techniques interested you most?

Activity 3: Write – Discuss

Individually, and as a class, we will review and evaluate what we have learned in the unit, its topic, and about telling stories through film, creating compelling stories and characters, and analyzing filmmakers’ technique and artistic decisions.

Central Question:

How do we tell stories with films?

Using the Culminating Task Progress Tracker for this unit, assess your own learning, work, and improvement within the unit. Use the following questions to help guide your reflection:

:

  1. How did the texts in this unit help you understand or think about the Central Question?

  2. Knowledge

    1. What knowledge from the unit do you feel the most comfortable communicating?

    2. What areas are still unclear for you?

  3. Skills

    1. What skills from the unit do you feel most comfortable applying moving forward?

    2. What skills are still unclear for you?

  4. Using the Culminating Task Progress Tracker as a guide, can you explain how your understanding of the texts and topic progressed throughout the unit?

Discuss with the class what you have learned about telling stories through film and the skills of analyzing films.

Activity 4: Discuss

We will reflect on and discuss the possible connections throughout the unit and across other units from this year, as well as the research we might choose to conduct in the final Application Unit.

Follow along as your teacher overviews the Application Unit and the collaborative and independent research project you will be doing to complete the year’s learning. Ask questions about what will be expected of you and what options you will have for completing the culminating project.

Individually, reflect on what interested you during this unit and what you might want to explore further. Capture these reflections on the Application Unit Potential Topics Tool. Use the following questions to help guide your reflection:

  1. Were there any particular topics or texts that captured your attention? Why?

  2. What about each text or topic do you still want to study? What questions do you still have? Write these down in the Questions or Subtopics to Explore column.

  3. How would you begin to research each text or topic?

As a class or in groups, have a final discussion about what engaged you in this unit as well as what and how you might want to study further for the final Application Unit.
