Section 5: Overview

Culminating Task

We will prepare to write, develop, and publish the Culminating Task narratives. We will reflect on the understanding we have built through the unit texts by engaging in a reflective class discussion.

  • Lesson 1:

We will prepare for the Culminating Task by revisiting the Central Question and the Culminating Task Checklist. We will also prepare to write a narrative by analyzing the narrative vignettes from the Section 2 and 3 Diagnostics and by completing a Storyboard Planning Tool.

  • Lesson 2:

We will share our planning with peers and obtain vital feedback. We will also draft our Culminating Task narrative.

  • Lesson 3:

We will review the coherence of our narratives by considering our inclusion of narrative shift, nonlinear sequencing, and theme development within our stories. We will work to improve the development of our characters by focusing on their dialogue, thoughts, and interactions and how these elements help to move the narrative forward. We will look at the imagery and language and how these help to establish the mood.

  • Lesson 4:

We will do the final editing of our narratives, including peer and self-reviews to ensure that we have included all requirements of the Culminating Task. We will publish our narratives in a final form.

  • Lesson 5:

In a culminating activity, we share the knowledge we have gained and the connections we have made by reading our independent reading texts.
