Lesson 14 What is a Line Plot?

    • Let’s learn a new way to represent data.

Warm-up Notice and Wonder: “Handy” Graphs

What do you notice? What do you wonder?

Bar graph. Glove Sizes. Horizontal axis labeled small, medium, large. Vertical axis from 0 to 10 by ones. Height of bar: small 6, medium 8, large 3.
Graph. titled Hand Spans of Teachers from 0 to 10 by ones. Horizontal axis, hand span in inches. Beginning at 6 the number of X’s above each  increment is 3, 3, 5, 2, 1.

Activity 1 Measure Our Hand Spans

Pencil tracing hand. Dotted line from top of thumb to top of pinky finger.
  1. Trace your hand. (Spread your fingers wide.)

  2. Draw a line from your thumb to your pinky. This line represents your hand span. Measure the length of your hand span in inches.

My hand span is inches.

Activity 2 Interpret Our Numerical Data

  1. What was the longest hand span?

  2. What was the shortest hand span?

  3. Write another statement about our class’ hand spans based on the line plot.
