Activity 1 Add One That Doesn’t Belong

Here are two incomplete Which One Doesn’t Belong sets, each with one item missing. For each set:

  • Find at least one reason that all items belong in the set.

  • Find at least one reason that each item doesn’t belong.

  • Add an item to complete each set. Make sure there is at least one reason it belongs and one reason it doesn’t belong.

Problem 1

Set 1

incomplete Which One Doesn’t Belong set. A containing 4.8. B empty. C containing 13.05. D containing 5.
  1. A, C, and D all belong because  …

  2. A doesn’t belong because …

  3. C doesn’t belong because …

  4. D doesn’t belong because …

  5. Add a new item B.

    • It belongs because . . .

    • It doesn’t belong because  …

Problem 2

Set 2

set of images. A two rays. B two rays. C empty box. D two rays connected by a line segment.
  1. A, B, and D all belong because  …

  2. A doesn’t belong because …

  3. B doesn’t belong because …

  4. D doesn’t belong because  …

Activity 2 Add Two That Don’t Belong

Here is an incomplete Which One Doesn’t Belong set. It has two missing items.

incomplete Which One Doesn’t Belong set. A containing (4+3)x(2-1). B containing (4+3)+(2-1). C and D empty boxes.

  4. C doesn’t belong because …

  5. D doesn’t belong because …

  6. After you’ve completed the set, check items A and B. Does each one still have a reason not to belong? If not, adjust your new items so that A and B are each still unique in some way.

Activity 3 Add Three That Don’t Belong

Here is an incomplete Which One Doesn’t Belong set. It has three missing items.

  1. incomplete Which One Doesn’t Belong set. A containing the multiplication algorithm showing all steps to solve 423x6. B, C, D all blank.

Add three items to complete the set. Make sure there is at least one reason that all items belong and at least one reason each item doesn’t belong.

  2. They all belong in the set because  …
