Activity 1: Read

We will identify the parts of an objective summary.

Read the example summary. Using the following guiding questions, annotate the summary:

  1. What elements of the text are included in the summary?

  2. How is the summary organized?

  3. What is the tone (author’s attitude toward the subject) of the summary?

  4. How does the summary build on the central idea?

Activity 2: Discuss

We will define objective tone.

As a class, review the definition of objective.

  1. What does it mean to be objective?

  2. What is the opposite of the word objective?

  3. Can you give an example of a situation in which someone is being objective and an example of a situation in which someone is not being objective?

After defining the term, discuss why it is important for a summary to be objective.

Activity 3: Write

We will practice writing an objective summary.

As a class, watch a short story your teacher presents.

As you view the short film, take notes on a copy of the Summarizing Text Tool; write the primary events in the Key Details rows.

With a partner, complete the Summarizing Text Tool.

Activity 4: Read

We will share the drafts of our summaries.

Join another partner group and exchange your Summarizing Text Tools. Read over their summary and check for the following:

  1. Does it include the title?

  2. Does it include the main characters?

  3. Does it identify the central idea?

  4. Are the details important for understanding the central idea?

  5. Is the summary accurate?

  6. Is the summary objective?
