Activity 1: Read

To prepare for the Section Diagnostic, we will read our assigned letters in our expert groups.

Step 1

Read your assigned letters between Alexander Hamilton and Angelica Church in your group, using the text-specific questions in the Section 3 Question Set to guide your analysis. Focus on finding evidence that will help you make an inference about their relationship.

While reading, annotate the text: underline sentences that help you identify the central idea of the excerpts, and circle unfamiliar words.

Step 2

Go back to the unfamiliar words and define them using the dictionary or context clues. Add them to your Vocabulary Journal.

Step 3

Paraphrase the central idea of the letters in your own words.

Step 4

Next, closely read that song in your group using the Schuyler-Hamilton Note-Taking Tool.

  • Write evidence of the relationship between Hamilton and Angelica in the second column.

  • In the third column, explain what the evidence tells you about the relationship between Hamilton and Angelica.

Step 5

After closely reading the letter in your group, form different groups in which all members have read different letters. Each member should present the following:

  • your summary and central idea of the letters

  • your evidence

  • your analysis

While presenting, group members should take notes of the evidence and analysis on the Schuyler-Hamilton Note-Taking Tool.

Discuss the evidence and analysis and make an inference about Hamilton and Angelica’s relationship in the Express Your Understanding row.

Activity 2: Read

In pairs, we will read excerpts from Ron Chernow’s Biography Alexander Hamilton.

With your partner, read one of the four excerpts from Ron Chernow’s biography, Alexander Hamilton: Introduction to Angelica and Hamilton (pp. 133-134), Separation of Angelica and Hamilton (pp. 204-205), Seas of Blood (pp. 466-467), or Hamilton Letter to Angelica (pp. 583-584).

While reading, underline sentences that help you identify the central idea of the excerpt, and circle unfamiliar words.

Go back to the unfamiliar words and define them using the dictionary or context clues and add them to your Vocabulary Journal. Paraphrase the central idea of the excerpts in your own words. Share the central idea of the excerpts with the entire class.

Work with a partner or group to respond to the vocabulary exercises, as directed by your teacher.
