Activity 1: Read

We will introduce the jigsaw method and the Jigsaw Note-Taking Tool.

Through a series of six different jigsaws in this unit, you will become experts about the three focus figures whose narratives are used prominently by Wilkerson in her text. You have been assigned to your home group, in which you have been designated as either Expert A, Expert B, or Expert C. In this jigsaw and every subsequent one in this unit, you will work with other experts with your same letter designation to read and learn about your assigned person.

The person you are assigned to work with will rotate for each new jigsaw; for example, if you are Expert A, then in this first jigsaw you will read about Ida, but in the next one, you will read about George, and in the third one, you will read about Robert. In the fourth, you will begin the rotation again.

Once you read through the text in your expert groups and respond to the guiding questions on your Jigsaw Note-Taking Tool, you will return to your home group in the next lesson to share and teach your group about your assigned focus figure in a jigsaw discussion.

Individually, take a moment to review the Jigsaw Note-Taking Tool.

  1. What questions do you have about the jigsaw method or about using this tool?

Share your questions with the whole group to ensure clarity before we begin the first jigsaw.

Activity 2: Read

We will frame our jigsaw work with Richard Wright’s opening epigraphs on page 17 of The Warmth of Other Suns and then participate in our first jigsaw reading, working in our expert groups and using the Jigsaw Note-Taking Tool to learn about our assigned focus figure from the first half of part 2 of Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns.

Step 1

Listen and read along silently as your teacher reads aloud the epigraph by Richard Wright on page 17 of The Warmth of Other Suns. Keep this epigraph in your mind as you engage in your jigsaw reading, as you will discuss its connection to the reading at the close of class.

Step 2

Find the four sections on your Jigsaw Note-Taking Tool. With your expert group members, read the pages associated with your person for Jigsaw 1, Part 2. Work with your expert group to read the pages for your assigned person. Discuss each question in your group, and respond to the guiding questions below on the Jigsaw Note-Taking Tool:

  1. Life Prior to Migration: What do you learn about each person’s life prior to their departure from the South? What questions do you have?

  2. Push-and-Pull Factors Influencing the Decision to Leave: What do you learn about the push-and-pull factors influencing each person’s decision? What questions do you have?

  3. Immediate Impacts of Migration: What do you learn about the immediate impact of each person’s migration and about their life away from the South? What questions do you have?

  4. Long-Term Impacts of Migration: What do you learn about the long-term impact of each person’s migration? What questions do you have?

Pay attention to your expert group. Your person will change from question to question.
