Lesson 5

We will synthesize our understanding of the supplemental texts we have read and Parts 1 and 2 of The Warmth of Other Suns to determine the key ideas they convey about the relationship between slavery’s “end” and the Great Migration, which is the focus of the Section Diagnostic. We will also evaluate the structures used in the supplemental texts and Parts 1 and 2 and how those structures relate to the authors’ and poets’ purposes in the texts and how the language of the texts shapes the readers’ perceptions.

Work with your jigsaw home group to deepen understanding by noting and evaluating the effects of details in each of the new supplemental texts we’ve studied in this section. Use your completed tools from this section’s lessons to help you respond to the guiding questions below:

Activity 2: Discuss

To prepare for the Section Diagnostic, we will synthesize our initial understanding of this section’s guiding questions by responding to this section’s guiding questions in small groups.

Continue to work with your jigsaw home group to discuss your initial thoughts about the following questions, which will be the focus of our discussion in the next lesson’s Section Diagnostic:

  1. What is the relationship between the end of slavery and the Great Migration? What evidence from the text supports your response?

  2. What were the most significant factors that impacted the lives of African Americans in the South between 1915 and 1975? What evidence from the text supports your response?

  3. Which of those factors weighed most heavily in Ida’s, George’s, and Robert’s decisions to leave the South? What evidence from the text supports your response?

  4. How do the texts from this section enhance our understanding of the decision to migrate?
