Section 1: Section Diagnostic

Independently watch and analyze a movie from a recommended list. Summarize and analyze the movie, using an Understanding a Movie Tool to write down information and your thinking about it. Based on the ideas and evidence you have written down on the tool, write a multi-paragraph synopsis of the movie that provides background information about the movie, summarizes its storyline and its central characters’ story arcs, and analyzes its use of filmmaking techniques, its overall style, and the filmmaker’s message.

In writing your movie synopsis, be sure to do the following:

  • Identify the genre, central concept, and themes of the movie.

  • Describe the level of realism, mood, and atmosphere of the movie.

  • Summarize the storyline of the movie and the character arcs of its central characters.

  • Analyze how visual techniques and sound are used to develop the movie’s style.

  • Present and support concluding claims about the movie’s overall style and message.

  • Quote at least one claim from a reviewer of the movie and explain why you agree or disagree with it.

  • Write your synopsis in the present tense, using strong verbs and descriptions.
