Activity 1: Discuss

We will answer comprehension and analysis questions about the text to solidify our understanding.

With a partner, discuss the following questions, which can also be found on the Section 2 Question Set:

  1. Describe the setting of Garret Miller’s neighborhood. How does Henríquez use imagery to create a vivid picture of the setting? Cite specific details from the novel to support your answer.

  2. How does the setting contribute to the reader’s understanding of Garrett’s character? How does the setting contribute to developing a theme in the novel? Cite evidence from the text to support your interpretation.

  3. Describe the interaction between Alma and Garret. How does this conflict, and their reactions to it, help further develop their characters? Cite details from the text to support your answer.

  4. How do Alma and Garret’s conflict and interaction contribute to developing a theme in the novel? Cite evidence from the text to support your interpretation.

Write down your answers in your Learning Log.

Activity 2: Read

In preparation for the Section Diagnostic, we will review the section 2 diagnostic checklist.

Examine the Section 2 Diagnostic Checklist. Ask your teacher clarifying questions as needed.

Activity 3: Write

We will use a graphic organizer to help plan our response to the section 2 diagnostic.

Over the course of this section, you have taken copious notes on your Literary Elements and Narrative Techniques Note-Taking Tool. You will now review your notes and narrow your collection of quotations to the strongest example of each literary element.

Complete the Section 2 Diagnostic Note-Taking Tool, supplying one quote for each literary element. You should use quotes from both texts studied in this section (The Book of Unknown Americans and "Immigrants in Our Own Land"). For the Analysis column, craft one concise statement that addresses the guiding question: How does this quote develop a literary element in the text?

Activity 4: Read

We will make notes in our Learning Logs in preparation for the Section Diagnostic.

Review your Vocabulary Journal. Identify a significant word or words that you would like to use in your response to the Section Diagnostic.

Now review your Mentor Sentence Journal. Select at least one technique that you plan to use when writing your response to the Section Diagnostic.

You will use your planning materials to compose a response to the Section 2 Diagnostic in the next lesson.
