Lesson 12

We will revise our Section Diagnostic by focusing on our claims and support. Additionally, we will read the work of our classmates in order to provide feedback that will strengthen our writing.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I gather and organize relevant and sufficient evidence to demonstrate an understanding of the foundational texts about ethics from Section 1?

  • Can I develop and clearly communicate a meaningful and defensible claim that represents a valid, evidence-based analysis?

  • Can I revisit, refine, and revise my understanding, knowledge, and work based on discussions with others and feedback and review by myself and others?

Activity 1: Read – Write

We will review our writing to determine where we have made a claim and where we have established support for that claim.

Follow Part 1 of the Section 1 Diagnostic Peer Review Handout to guide you through your revisions.

Activity 2: Read – Write

We will share our writing with partners, allowing them to make suggestions for revision based on specific requirements.

Follow Part 2 on the Section 1 Diagnostic Peer Review Handout.

Activity 3: Discuss

After carefully reviewing a peer’s paper, we will engage in a discussion in order to report our findings and offer suggestions for feedback.

Sitting with your partner, take turns discussing the following:

  • your answers to the peer review questions

  • any additional marginal notes or suggestions on how to improve the writing of each claim and support statement

For homework, select at least one paragraph to revise based on your peer’s feedback.

Activity 4: Write

For homework, we will assess how prepared we are for the Culminating Task.

Step 1

For homework, review your Culminating Task Progress Tracker. Think about all you have learned and done during this unit. Evaluate your skills and knowledge by responding to the following questions:

  1. How prepared are you to succeed on the Culminating Task?

  2. What do you need to know and learn to do to succeed?

Step 2

Review the Central Question of the unit:

How do we determine the right thing to do?

Consider the following framing questions:

  1. What new knowledge do you have in relation to the Central Question?

  2. What are you still curious about in relation to the Central Question?

  3. What is the relationship between the question and the texts you have read so far? How do the texts shed light on the question? How does the question help you understand the texts?

  4. How has your response to the question evolved, deepened, or changed?

In your Learning Log, write your response to Question 3. You will return to this response in later lessons to examine how your understanding of the Central Question has evolved.
