Section 2: Overview

Collecting Sources

We will hone the skills we need in order to find, assess, and evaluate potential sources for our research. Using our inquiry questions, we will develop a research frame to ensure our research is comprehensive.

  • Lesson 1:

    Frame Research

We will build an initial research frame by generating and grouping inquiry questions to build inquiry paths that will further guide our investigations, and we will learn about the Research Frame Tool.

  • Lesson 2:

    Explore Source Usefulness

We will expand our understanding of source usefulness by examining the Assessing Sources Reference Guide and Potential Sources Tool. We will practice assessing common sources for accessibility and interest, relevance and richness, and credibility.

  • Lesson 3:

    Explore Source Usefulness

We will continue deepening our understanding and practicing assessing sources for credibility, bias, and balance. We will also begin searching for and assessing texts for our team’s research investigation.

  • Lesson 4:

Find, Assess, and Annotate Potential Sources

We will explore and practice effective annotation of research sources as part of our investigation and begin finding and assessing potential sources using the Potential Sources Tool as well as taking notes using the Research Note-Taking Tool. We will also continue to revise our Research Frame Tool to match our evolving ideas and conference with our teacher about our process, potential sources, and ideas.

  • Lesson 5:

Find, Assess, and Annotate Potential Sources

We will continue searching, assessing, and annotating potential texts for our team’s research investigation. We will conference with our teacher and continue to revise our Research Frame Tool to capture our evolving ideas and prepare to present it to another team.

  • Lesson 6:

Peer Review and Revise your Research Frame Tool

Using our Research Frame Tools, we will present our research frame and potential sources to another team who will provide feedback to improve and expand our thinking. We will then use the feedback to revise our frames and continue searching, assessing, and annotating potential texts.

  • Lesson 7:

We will reflect on our work and process, submit our research materials for feedback and formative assessment, and prepare for the next section of the unit, in which we deepen our understanding.
