Section 3: Section Diagnostic

Consider what you have learned about the Civil Rights Movement, the ideas of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the photography of Charles Moore and other civil rights photojournalists. Identify at least one photograph and one informational text that helped you understand how the prejudice and segregation depicted in civil rights-era photos was “imprisoned in a luminous glare revealing the naked truth to the whole world.”

Write a multiparagraph response to the following question:

  1. How did the photojournalism of Charles Moore and others define the American Civil Rights Movement and serve as a catalyst for social and political change?

In your response, be sure to do the following:

  • Identify and visually analyze one or more civil rights-era photographs (from Charles Moore or another photojournalist) that captured and publicized the Birmingham protests or other events of the Civil Rights Movement.

  • Develop a claim explaining the significance of the photographs in terms of what they documented and revealed to the world.

  • Support your response using details from the photographs and evidence from your selected informational text.
