Section 5: Overview

Culminating Task

How has the work of an American photojournalist highlighted, defined, and influenced important moments and figures in history and culture? In response to this question, we will prepare to write and develop the Culminating Task essay and will also reflect on the understanding we have built through examining the unit’s photographs and texts. We will continue to consider the Central Question: How do images change the world? By considering this question and extending the analysis we have done for a significant American photojournalist in a previous Section Diagnostic, we will develop an expository essay that demonstrates what we have learned about the influence of photojournalism on history and culture.

  • Lesson 1:

    We will prepare to write our responses to the Culminating Task by breaking down the prompt and organizing the information and tools we have gathered and used throughout the unit. We will also review our previous activities and begin gathering evidence, as we move toward crafting a thesis statement in the following lesson.

  • Lesson 2:

    We will prewrite, establishing as our goal for this lesson the creation of an introductory paragraph. As we work through the writing process to complete the Culminating Task, our beginning steps will forge the foundation for our writing.

  • Lesson 3:

    We will incorporate the thesis statement into an introductory paragraph as we begin the composition of our essay for the Culminating Task.

  • Lesson 4:

    We will continue to develop our essays for the Culminating Task by creating an outline and draft.

  • Lesson 5:

    We will continue to develop our essays for the Culminating Task by revising our work, focusing on organization and support and ultimately concluding the essay.

  • Lesson 6:

    We will publish our written answer to the Culminating Task by creating a final draft.

  • Lesson 7:

    We will finish the unit by engaging in a whole-class discussion about the unit’s Central Question.

  • Lesson 8:

    In a culminating activity, we share the knowledge we have gained and the connections we have made by reading our independent reading texts.
