Activity 1: Write

We will organize our ideas and make an outline or plan for the essay.

Using the introductory paragraph with the thesis statement, along with gathered evidence, organize the essay and evidence. Make a general plan, sequence, or outline of ideas that will be a roadmap for the essay, to develop the main idea of the thesis statement.

Consider three points you want to make in response to the Culminating Task question regarding the way in which your photojournalist and their photojournalism has highlighted and defined important moments in history and culture. Remind yourself of the “be sure to” expectations, which can help you organize sections of your essay:

  • Present and develop a central claim about how the photojournalist has highlighted, defined, and influenced history and culture.

  • Present and develop supporting claims about each photograph or text you select, explaining how and why the photographs were politically influential, made history, or were catalysts for social change.

  • Provide historical and social context about your chosen photographs, including information about the photojournalist and the purpose and message of their photographs.

  • Explain how visual evidence from the photographs and ideas from texts develop and support your claim.

  • Explain connections or comparisons between the photographs and how, together, they are representative of the photojournalist and the field of photojournalism.

  • Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary that demonstrates your knowledge of the topic.

  • Establish and maintain a formal style and objective point of view.

Activity 2: Write

We will begin creating a rough draft of our expository essay in response to the Culminating Task.

Begin drafting body paragraphs, using the plan or outline you created. The three expectations of the task can be incorporated into your essay as separate paragraphs. Refer to the directions on the Forming Evidence-Based Claims Tool as needed.
