Lesson 2

For each of our claims and counterclaims, we will organize evidence from the unit materials and research that can be used to support a claim or respond to others’ claims that we intend to counter.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I identify, sequence, and cite evidence that is relevant and necessary to develop and support each of my claims and counterclaims?

  • Can I use peer feedback and reflective self-assessment to determine how to revise and improve my organized evidence plan for my argument and its claims?

Activity 1: Write

For each of our claims or counterclaims, we will complete the Organizing Evidence Tool, listing and sequencing the evidence, information, and quotations we intend to use to support our arguments.

Review the draft plan you have developed for your argument. If necessary, make any additions or revisions.

Review the use of the Organizing Evidence Tool with your teacher to make final recordings and citations for the evidence you will use to develop each of your argument’s claims or counterclaims. For each claim or counterclaim, list, in order, the supporting evidence you intend to use.

Activity 2: Discuss – Write

We will work with a review partner from our subtopic team to discuss our claim-based organizational plan and the evidence we have identified.

Work with a review partner. Share your plan, being specific about each of the claims you plan to develop and the supporting evidence you have listed.

Write down and reflect on the constructive feedback you receive.

Activity 3: Write

We will finalize the claim-based plan and organized evidence for our arguments.

Based on your partner’s feedback and your own review and reflection, finalize your plan and determine if you need any further evidence.

Activity 4: Write

We will review the expectations of the section 4 diagnostic. For homework, we will identify and organize any additional evidence we may need to develop our argument and its claims.

Review the Section 4 Diagnostic Checklist.

Pay particular attention, again, to the task’s questions, options, and expectations for the task:

  • Specifically explain the issue within, and your perspective on, your subtopic.

  • Clearly communicate and explain the argument’s central position and each of its supporting claims, including at least one counterclaim.

  • Describe the organizational plan you intend to use to present the argument.

  • Explain how you will use evidence and reasoning to develop the argument, identifying the main sources you intend to cite.

For homework, do a final review of everything you have examined or produced in the unit and your claim-based plan. Determine if you have any further needs for evidence or if there is something you had not previously considered as a useful addition.

Review your Vocabulary Journal. Identify a significant word or words that you would like to use in your response to the Section Diagnostic.

Review your Mentor Sentence Journal. Select at least one technique that you plan to use when writing your response to the Section Diagnostic.
