Section 2: Overview

Cultural Norms in Homer’s Greece

In this section, we will examine power as it is related to the concept of xenia, gender, and roles. We will be asked to consider who or what has the most power in The Odyssey by considering the cultural norms of ancient Greek society, the way in which being a woman strengthens or limits power, and how one’s role in society as a god, mortal, or monster impacts the amount of power they have in situations.

  • Lesson 1:

    We will study Book 5 and closely read Athena’s speech, focusing on the role of gods in The Odyssey. We will analyze and discuss how the gods interfere with Odysseus’s journey home. In addition, we will discuss the role of fate.

  • Lesson 2:

    We will discuss Books 6 and 7, focusing on the roles of the gods in The Odyssey.

  • Lesson 3:

    We will read “Odysseus the Foreigner” and analyze two receptions of Odysseus: one from Polyphemus and one from the Phaeanicians. Then, we will read the article “Ancient Greek Wisdom for Today’s Leadership Crisis'' by Emily Anhalt and discuss Odysseus’s qualities as a leader.

  • Lesson 4:

    We will study how language and word choice impact meaning and deepen our understanding of The Odyssey. We will also prepare for Section 2 Diagnostic.

  • Lesson 5:

    We will review the notes we gathered and organized in preparation for the Section Diagnostic. Then, we will participate in a Socratic Seminar.

  • Lesson 6:

    We will review the teacher’s feedback on our Section Diagnostic and will use the feedback to make revisions to our work.

  • Lesson 7:

    We will share the understanding we have gained through our independent reading and continue reading our texts.
