Section 3: Overview

Odysseus as Hero

In this section, we will explore the qualities that make up a hero and how those qualities have evolved since the time of the ancient Greeks; we will consider how heroic qualities relate to the concept and application of power. We will study the story of The Odyssey, both chronologically and in the order Homer tells it. We will revisit Penelope’s use of power and Telemachus’s evolution from boy to man.

  • Lesson 1:

We will discuss the Section 3 Diagnostic and complete an in-depth study of the qualities that make up a hero.

  • Lesson 2:

We will discuss the first part of Book 12 and read Book 12 using a jigsaw activity.

  • Lesson 3:

We will discuss the nonlinear plot structure of the poem and then list the major events in order of their telling. We will then re-sort them in chronological order and informally present the power displayed in each interaction.

  • Lesson 4:

We will read excerpts and summarize Books 13–16 of The Odyssey in preparation for the upcoming Section Diagnostic. We will consider Penelope’s changing use of power and Telemachus’s evolving maturity.

  • Lesson 5:

We will write and revise a well-developed analytical response that explores the ways in which various female characters in The Odyssey use their power.

  • Lesson 6:

We will review feedback on the Section Diagnostic. We will use the feedback to make revisions to our work.

  • Lesson 7:

We will share the understanding we have gained through our independent reading and continue to read our texts.
