Lesson 16

We will commence an independent reading program in which we choose texts to read independently as we progress through the unit. We will learn how to choose texts, what activities we may complete, about the final task, and about any materials we will use as we read our independent reading texts. We will begin by reading our texts, using tools to help us take notes and analyze important textual elements.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I choose an independent reading text that I feel I can engage with for the next few weeks?

  • Can I express why I have chosen a text to my teacher and outline a reading and pacing plan?

  • Do I understand the expectations and options for independent reading in this unit?

Activity 1: Discuss

We will choose our independent reading texts, which we will read throughout the course of the unit. Reading independently will help us further understand key elements we study in this unit, while also allowing us to explore an author and text of our choosing.

Review the suggested options for independent reading related to the unit, and also consider other texts that you might have wanted to read.

Select a text to read independently or determine if you need to think more before making a choice.

When you have selected a text, write down the title and author in your Learning Log.

Activity 2: Read – Write

We will create an independent reading plan and begin reading our independent reading texts.

Create a reading and pacing plan to help you determine what tools you might use to take notes and analyze your text and how much of your text you will need to read per week.

Rely on your teacher for further instructions and guidance.
