Lesson 10

We will continue to explore the following question: How will I use primary and secondary sources to create an original work? In our groups, we will select our accompanying music and write lyrics for our songs, raps, or poems.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I actively focus my attention on the collaborative tasks working with my group?

  • Can I generate and develop ideas, positions, products, and solutions to problems with my group?

  • Can I gather and organize relevant and sufficient evidence to demonstrate an understanding of texts and topics, support claims, and develop ideas in my song, rap, or poem?

  • Can I use language and strategies to accomplish my intended purpose in communicating and creating my song, rap, or poem?

Activity 1: Discuss

We will review our work from the previous lesson and prepare to write our songs.

In your research group, review your planning from the previous lesson and your musical choices.

Make a plan for your writing by answering the following question:

  1. Will you assign verses to different group members?

If you have Internet access, you might consult a rhyming dictionary.

Activity 2: Write

Your group will create song lyrics based on your research, analysis, and exploration.

Influenced by Lin-Manuel Miranda and using key words and phrases from your primary sources, write lyrics for your original piece or new verses to an existing piece with your group. Be sure to keep in mind the following questions from the Section 5 Diagnostic Checklist when you create your original work:

  1. How will you introduce the problem or situation or an observation about your person or event?

  2. How can you use dialogue and description to develop the events or characters?

  3. What precise words and phrases, literary or rhetorical devices, and sensory language can you use to convey a vivid description?

  4. How can you use words to create a picture of the experiences, events, and characters?

  5. What words and or phrases from your primary sources will you use?

  6. How will you conclude the song?

Activity 3: Write

We will finish our songs and prepare for our presentations.

In your research group, finish preparing for your group presentation. If you need to rehearse something at home, make sure all members know the expectations.
