Lesson 9

We will continue to explore the following question: How will I use primary and secondary sources to create an original work? In our groups, we will use our analyses and notes from the previous lessons to create our blueprints for our song, rap, or poem.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I actively focus my attention on the collaborative tasks working with my group?

  • Can I pay attention to and acknowledge others while thoughtfully considering their ideas?

  • Can I generate and develop ideas, positions, products, and solutions to problems with my group?

Activity 1: Discuss

We will use our analyses and notes from the previous lesson to create our blueprint for our song lyrics.

Review the Section 5 Diagnostic Checklist.

In your small group, use your analysis and notes from the previous lessons as guidance. Use the Song Lyrics Action Plan Tool to guide your thinking. Brainstorm, discuss, and decide as a group the following elements and guiding questions for the original lyrics in your song lyrics:

The Problem

  1. How will you introduce the problem, situation, or observation about your person or event to the audience?

Characters

  1. How will you use dialogue and description to develop the events or characters?

Word Choice

  1. What words and phrases, rhetorical devices, or sensory language will you use to convey a vivid picture of the experiences, events, and characters?

Textual Evidence

  1. What words, phrases, or details from your primary sources will you use?

Conclusion

  1. How will you conclude the song, rap, or poem?

Activity 2: Discuss

Your group will explore possible song melodies or beats.

As a group, discuss, brainstorm, and explore the music or beats you would like to use with your original lyrics. You can use the Internet to explore the possibilities. Some things to consider include the following:

  1. Do you want to use music or perform acapella (without music)?

  2. Is there an existing song or melody you would like to use? Or would you like to create your own?

  3. Are there some existing beats you would like to use? Or would you like to create your own?

Based on your group’s exploration and discussion, come to a decision concerning the music or beat that will accompany your original song lyrics.
