Activity 1: Read

We will examine how Achebe uses imagery to develop characters.

Examine the following quote about Enoch from Chapter 22:

when he stood or walked his heels came together and his feet opened outwards as if they had quarreled and meant to go in different directions. (p. 185)

Respond to the following question in your Learning Log:

  1. What do you learn about Enoch from this imagery? How does this imagery develop his character?

Identify a sentence from the novel that represents your chosen character using imagery and explain how it expresses the character.

Activity 2: Read

We will identify examples of syntax and imagery that are used to develop our chosen characters.

Review Part 3 of the novel to find examples in which imagery is used to develop the character you are studying. Analyze the syntax and imagery used to develop your character by responding to the following questions for each quotation:

  1. What does the imagery tell you about the character?

  2. How do the words in this quotation help the reader understand the character better?

  3. What tone do the words in this quotation create?
