Section 3: Overview

Things Fall Apart

We will read the rest of Things Fall Apart and examine the cultural collision that develops between the Western missionaries and the Igbo villagers. We will also examine the title of the novel and consider the author’s stylistic choices in the novel.

  • Lesson 1:

    We will analyze how the colonists gain further influence within the Igbo villages.

  • Lesson 2:

    We will determine the themes of Things Fall Apart.

  • Lesson 3:

    We will study important characters in the last four chapters of the novel.

  • Lesson 4:

    We will focus on how diction and tone are used to develop a character’s voice and find examples for our character study.

  • Lesson 5:

    We will examine how the colonists gain further influence within the Igbo villages.

  • Lesson 6:

    We will discuss the characterizations of the District Commissioner and Okonkwo, and we will explore the use of figurative language in the novel.

  • Lesson 7:

    We will write character analyses for characters from Things Fall Apart.

  • Lesson 8:

    We will review feedback on the Section Diagnostic. We will use the feedback to make revisions to our work.

  • Lesson 9:

    We will share the analyses we have made about our independent reading texts and make connections to the unit. We will plan a final product to share our experiences from reading independently and the knowledge we have gained.
