Development Unit: Community

Belonging—being a part of something—is an important part of the human experience. In this unit, we will explore the question, What does it mean to belong to a community? We will develop an understanding of how people become members of their communities by reading works by a variety of authors, including Fatimah Asghar, James Baldwin, J.D. Vance, Robert Putnam, and Amy Tan. We will read works closely and develop an understanding of the rhetorical strategies authors use to describe their communities and develop their claims about them. Through our analysis, we will deepen our understanding of our own communities and the rhetorical strategies we can use to describe them to various audiences. Our work will culminate through crafting original pieces of our own that portray our communities.
