Section 5: Overview

Culminating Task

We will blend genres to convey the importance, critical messages, legitimacy and central values of communities we belong to.

  • Lesson 1:

    We will practice gathering and organizing evidence by reading an excerpt from Toni Morrison, “The Site of Memory,” and determining which details are most central to supporting her central idea.

  • Lesson 2:

    We will begin planning for the Culminating Task.

  • Lesson 3:

    We will practice using techniques to write about a memory.

  • Lesson 4:

    We will begin writing the body paragraphs for the Culminating Task.

  • Lesson 5:

    We will determine the overall message of our writing and will draft an introduction and conclusion to our Culminating Task.

  • Lesson 6:

    We will make our final revisions in order to complete the Culminating Task.

  • Lesson 7:

    We will finish the unit by engaging in a whole-class discussion about community. We will also discuss Culminating Task topics that relate to the unit and identify possible pathways to explore for the Application Unit.

  • Lesson 8:

    In a culminating activity, we share the knowledge we have gained and the connections we have made by reading our independent reading texts.
