Activity 1: Discuss

We will participate in part 2 of a gallery walk to deepen our understanding of Hamlet’s madness.

We will begin Part 2 of the gallery walk in this lesson.

For Part 2, your group will rotate to examine the other groups’ responses. Referring to your notes, provide feedback for each group’s chart. Your feedback must address at least one of the following questions:

  1. What makes this interpretation strong?

  2. What might be improved?

  3. Are there any inaccuracies in their claims? If so, what are they and what makes them inaccurate?

  4. What other pieces of evidence are there to consider?

Activity 2: Discuss – Write

We will revise our claim based on feedback from our peers.

For Part 3 of the gallery walk, examine the feedback your group has received. Revise or refine your claim based on that feedback.

Activity 3: Discuss

We will participate in a final rotation of the gallery walk and make any necessary additions or revisions in our Psychological Lens Note-Taking Tool.

For Part 4 of the gallery walk, examine the revised claims from each group.

As you do a final walk, consider where the characters’ views of Hamlet agree and where they disagree. Ask yourself the following question:

  1. How do these areas of agreement and disagreement affect my understanding of the character Hamlet?

Add notes to your Psychological Lens Note-Taking Tool based on your observations.

You will use these notes to prepare for the Section 2 Diagnostic and the Culminating Task.

Activity 4: Read

For homework, we will read and annotate lines 1–63 from Act 3, Scene 1.

For homework, read Lines 1-63 from Act 3, Scene 1. Use the following questions to guide your reading:

  1. What information does Rosencrantz and Guildenstern share with Claudius?

  2. What plan does Polonius devise?

As you read for homework, write down new or interesting words you encounter in your Vocabulary Journal. If necessary, revisit the Vocabulary in Context Tool to assist you with words or phrases you struggle with.
