Lesson 8

We will share and submit our personal responses to the unit’s questions and reflect on what we have learned about living a life well-lived, life compasses, and various authors’ work and perspectives. We will complete a self-assessment of our work and learning in the unit and will prepare for the end-of-year Application Unit by previewing possible questions and tasks that relate to this unit.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I synthesize information from a variety of research and unit texts to create new understanding?

  • Can I publish my Culminating Tasks for appropriate audiences?

Activity 1: Read – Listen

We will read our personal responses in pairs and submit them to our teacher.

Read your final draft of your personal response to the unit’s questions to your writing partner. Listen actively while your partner reads to you. Discuss what strikes you as you hear the personal reflections, essays, or narratives read aloud. Then, submit your written response to your teacher.

Activity 2: Discuss

We will reflect on what we have learned about living a life well-lived and the compasses we might choose to carry in our next steps in life.

Submit your final narratives to your teacher.

In a class discussion, reflect on what you have learned about the stories, topics, human qualities or virtues, and compasses you have encountered in the unit and the unit’s Central Questions:

  1. What does it mean to live a life well-lived?

  2. What compass might you carry as you undertake your journey in the world?

Activity 3: Write

We will complete a self-evaluation of our learning and work in the unit.

Complete a self-evaluation of learning and skill development and set goals for improvement in future units.

Activity 4: Discuss

We will examine and discuss possible connections among this unit, other units from the year, and the research we might choose to do in the final Application Unit.

Follow along as your teacher overviews the Application Unit and the collaborative and independent research project you will be doing to complete the year’s learning. Ask questions about what will be expected of you and what options you will have for completing the culminating project.

Individually, reflect on what interested you during this unit and what you might want to explore further. Capture these reflections on the Application Unit Potential Topics Tool. Use the following questions to help guide your reflection:

  1. Were there any particular topics or texts that captured your attention? Why?

  2. What about each text or topic do you still want to study? What questions do you still have? Write these down in the Questions or Subtopics to Explore column.

  3. How would you begin to research each text or topic?

As a class or in groups, have a final discussion about what engaged you in this unit as well as what and how you might want to study further for the final Application Unit.
