Lesson 3

We will begin drafting our response to the Culminating Task using our notes from the Culminating Task Planning Guide and class discussion.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I develop and clearly communicate a meaningful and defensible claim about how a theme is developed during the course of multiple acts in Romeo and Juliet and how it is enhanced in the two film adaptations?

  • Can I sequence and group sentences and paragraphs and use devices, techniques, descriptions, reasoning, evidence, and visual elements to establish coherent, logical, and well-developed claims about how a theme is developed in Romeo and Juliet and the two film adaptations?

Activity 1: Read – Discuss

We will reread our notes on the identify and organize supporting evidence section of the Culminating Task Planning Guide and consider what needs to be done to introduce our claim.

Review your notes on the Identify and Organize Supporting Evidence section of the Culminating Task Planning Guide.

Participate in a class discussion regarding the ways to introduce an essay, and consider the following components:

  • providing relevant background knowledge

  • piquing the reader’s interest

  • clearly stating your central claim

  • “completing the circle” (linking an opening question, example, or quotation to a final set of thoughts)

  • avoiding cliches

  • implementing other ideas suggested by your teacher or classmates

Determine if one of your ideas already represents an effective opener for your literary analysis, or if you need to add something to get your readers’ attention and welcome them into your essay.

Activity 2: Discuss

We will reread our notes on section 3 of the Culminating Task Planning Guide and think about how to conclude it in a way that will leave our intended readers with final thoughts that can “Complete The Circle” with our introductory ideas and paragraphs.

Participate in a class discussion regarding the ways to conclude an essay, and consider the following components:

  • directly linking the conclusion to the introduction to “complete the circle” and increasing the argument’s sense of unit

  • using a final example, story, or quotation to add a dramatic finish to the essay

  • avoiding cliches

  • implementing other options suggested by your teacher or classmates

Activity 3: Write

We will review expectations and then draft our Culminating Task essays. We will complete our drafts for homework.

Review your Vocabulary Journal. Identify a significant word or words that you would like to use in your response to the Culminating Task. Review your Mentor Sentence Journal. Select at least one technique that you plan to use when writing your response.

Use the work you have completed on your Culminating Task Planning Guide to draft a multiparagraph response that addresses the prompt. Complete your draft for homework.
