We will discuss Act 1, Scene 5 of Hamlet and prepare for the Section 1 Diagnostic by analyzing a model response.

Activity 1: Discuss

We will discuss our homework, lines 120–212 of Act 1, Scene 5.

As a class, discuss the following questions:

  1. What does Hamlet reveal to Horatio and Marcellus?

  2. What does he not reveal? Why?

Now, discuss the questions below:

  1. In Line 190, Hamlet warns Marcellus and Horatio that they may see him acting strange or odd. Why would Hamlet pretend to be mad?

  2. What does this decision reveal about his state of mind? What evidence can you offer from the text to support your response?

Activity 2: Read

We will preview the prompt for the section 1 diagnostic and examine a model claim.

Examine the prompt for the Section 1 Diagnostic on the Section 1 Diagnostic Checklist.

To prepare for the Section Diagnostic, read and annotate the Section 1 Diagnostic Model Claim Handout, which analyzes Act 1, Scene 5 through an archetypal lens. Answer the corresponding questions on the handout. After you have independently analyzed the model, discuss your answers with a partner.

Activity 3: Read

We will prepare for the Section Diagnostic by selecting a critical lens and gathering evidence to support our claim.

To prepare for the Section Diagnostic, complete the following steps:

  • Select the lens through which you will analyze the play.

  • Select the scene you will focus on.

  • Review your notes on the corresponding Note-Taking Tool for your selected lens. Collect additional evidence to support your analysis.

  • Review your Vocabulary Journal. Identify a significant word or words that you would like to use in your response.
