Section 2: Overview

Analyze Information, Texts, and Arguments Related to Artificial Intelligence

We will closely examine complex issues related to the background knowledge presented in Section 1. We will examine, analyze, and discuss arguments related to the three subtopics: job markets, machine learning, and privacy. We will then choose one of the subtopics to do additional research on, which we will ultimately develop positions and arguments for in Sections 3–5.

  • Lesson 1:

We will continue to focus on the following question: How has artificial intelligence affected society? We will look specifically at the job market through the questions: Should people be concerned about the possibility of AI replacing humans in jobs? Will AI create or eliminate jobs? Why or why not?

  • Lesson 2:

We will continue or look into the questions: Should people be concerned about the possibility of AI replacing humans in jobs? Will AI create or eliminate jobs? Why or why not? We will read and examine excerpts from “The Future of Employment: How Susceptible Are Jobs to Computerisation?” To support our reading, we will study challenging vocabulary from the text and consider a set of guiding questions to help us read it more closely.

  • Lesson 3:

We will continue to look into the following questions: Should people be concerned about the possibility of AI replacing humans in jobs? Will AI create or eliminate jobs? Why or why not? We will study the employment statistics for the American states we chose to research in our groups. We will develop claims about the patterns we see and consider those claims in relation to an op-ed piece from Michael Xie, founder, president, and CEO of Fortinet, who oversees the technology vision and strategy for the global network security leader.

  • Lesson 4:

We will begin to look into questions about machine learning and decision-making: Should our society allow AI to influence human decision-making or make decisions on its own? Why or why not? In order to do this, we will begin by defining machine learning and discovering how it is used in decision-making.

  • Lesson 5:

We will continue to look into the second group of subtopic questions: Should our society allow AI to influence human decision-making or make decisions on its own? Why or why not? We will read an article from ProPublica that questions the reliability of machine learning and decision-making.

  • Lesson 6:

We will continue to look into the questions: Should our society allow AI to influence human decision-making or make decisions on its own? Why or why not? We will delineate and evaluate a counterargument to the “Machine Bias” article. We will then begin our study of the third subtopic prompt: Is it possible to protect an individual’s privacy with the rise of artificial intelligence? Why or why not? We will do this by reading the study “Big Data: Seizing Opportunities, Preserving Values.”

  • Lesson 7:

We will prepare for the Socratic Seminar by individually completing a Forming Evidence-Based Claims Tool and developing evidence-based claims for one of the guiding questions.

  • Lesson 8:

We will continue our study of the questions: Is it possible to protect an individual’s privacy with the rise of artificial intelligence? Why or why not? We will discuss the study “Big Data: Seizing Opportunities, Preserving Values” in a Socratic Seminar.

  • Lesson 9:

We will prepare for our Section Diagnostic by unpacking the prompt and gathering evidence.

  • Lesson 10:

We will write a well-developed analysis of the author’s perspective, position, and major claims in “Why We Should Stop Fetishizing Privacy.” We will explain how this argument is a response to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

  • Lesson 11:

We will review feedback on the Section Diagnostic. We will use the feedback to make revisions to our work.

  • Lesson 12:

We will share the understanding we have gained through our independent reading and continue reading our texts.
