Lesson 5

We will work with our seminar teams to draft our presentations. We will reflect on and evaluate the progress of our research.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I participate collaboratively, offering ideas or judgments that are purposeful in moving the team toward goals, asking relevant and insightful questions, tolerating a range of positions and ambiguity in decision making, and evaluating the work of the group based on agreed-upon criteria as the seminar teams plan my presentations?

  • Can I revise my presentation plans as needed?

  • Can I plan to use an appropriate mode of delivery, whether written, oral, or multimodal, to present my research results?

Activity 1: Discuss

We will draft our presentations.

Step 1

Review your group’s norms and presentation plan, and respond to the following questions:

  1. What do you need to do to succeed on the presentation?

  2. How will you, specifically, contribute to your group?

  3. How will you know you have met your goals at the end of the lesson?

Work with your group to achieve your goals and draft your presentation.

Use the following guiding questions to help you plan and develop your presentation:

  1. What do you imagine your presentation delivery looking like? Knowing you only have 5-7 minutes, what is the critical information your audience must get?

  2. What sources are important to present? What facts, quotes, or questions will you present to the audience?

  3. What will each team member present?

  4. Who is going to start your presentation? Who will end? How will you immediately engage the audience? Who will answer questions?

  5. What tools or graphics do you need to present based on your presentation format? How will you access the tools or graphics you need?

  6. What planning or delivery tips from Chris Anderson’s "How to Give a Killer Presentation" can you use in your presentation?

Step 2

You will want to maintain close contact with other members of your seminar team to ensure that the component you are responsible for will fit in logically with the other components your team members are working on. Refer to the Organizing Reference Guide and Section 3 Diagnostic Checklist as needed.

Activity 2: Write – Discuss

We will reflect on our work to determine how prepared we are for the presentation.

Respond to the following questions on your tracker with your group:

  1. Did you meet the goals you set at the beginning of the lesson? How do you know you met your goals? Provide evidence.

  2. How did you, specifically, contribute to your group?

  3. On a scale from one to four, how well do you understand the topic, your research, the texts you read, and the presentation plan?
