Lesson 5

We will work with our research teams to draft our pathway presentations. We will reflect on and evaluate the progress of our research.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I work productively in various roles with my fellow pathway members to establish and meet goals for our group?

  • Can I take the necessary actions to prepare for the Section Diagnostic?

Activity 1: Discuss – Write

We will draft our presentations.

Review your group’s norms and presentation plan and respond to the following questions:

  1. What do you need to do to succeed on the Culminating Task?

  2. How will you, specifically, contribute to your group?

  3. How will you know you have met your goals at the end of the lesson?

Work with your group to achieve your goals and draft your presentation.

You will want to maintain close contact with other members of your research team to ensure that the component you are responsible for will fit in logically with the other components your team members are working on. Refer to the Foundation Unit Research and Presentation Guide as needed.

Activity 2: Write – Discuss

We will reflect on our work to determine how prepared we are for the Culminating Task.

Respond to the following questions in your Learning Log with your group:

  1. Did you meet the goals you set at the beginning of the lesson? How do you know you met your goals? Provide evidence.

  2. How did you, specifically, contribute to your group?

  3. On a scale from one to four, how well do you understand the topic, your research, the texts you read, and the presentation plan?

Activity 3: Read

For homework, we will prepare for the section 3 diagnostic.

Earlier in the unit, you wrote a draft of a multiparagraph response defining what a change agent is and supporting your definitions using five materials, “The Danger of Silence” (Clint Smith), “How to Start a Movement” (Derek Sivers), The Tipping Point (Introduction by Malcolm Gladwell), The Prince (Niccolò Machievelli) and John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address. You will revise that multiparagraph response using new evidence gleaned from your pathway texts.

Be prepared to revise your response in the following lesson to demonstrate how your understanding of change agents has expanded and changed after reading additional texts.

To prepare, complete the following steps for homework:

  1. Access your response to the Section 1 Diagnostic.

  2. Review your Vocabulary Journal. Identify a significant word or words that you would like to use in your revision.

  3. Review your Mentor Sentence Journal. Select at least one technique that you plan to use in your revision.

  4. Locate and organize additional evidence from pathway texts, including quotes with appropriate citations.
