Lesson 3

Draft Presentation

As we create a cohesive presentation for our learning community, each member of our team will compose distinct written components. We will each work independently, but we will also collaborate to revise, refine, and strengthen our presentation materials.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I revisit, refine, and revise my understanding, knowledge, and work based on discussions with others and feedback and review by myself and others?

  • Can I synthesize varied information from multiple sources into a coherent statement to present to our audience?

  • Can I use language and strategies to accomplish my intended purpose in communicating?

Activity 1: Discuss – Write

We will meet with our team to review and revise the outline and materials and tools list and confirm next steps before we continue to draft our other written components. Our teacher will conference with us, answering questions and advising us as we work.

Take a break from your independent drafting and meet with your team to review the draft of the outline and materials and tools list. Read, discuss, and revise these two documents.

Use the details from the Presentation Written Components and Presentation Structure sections of the Application Unit Presentation Guide and the Culminating Task Checklist to guide and inform your discussion and suggested revisions.

Adjust the outline and list as needed, given your discussion and any new thinking that resulted from the drafting of the components.

Check in with one another about how the drafting is going and any challenges that have arisen during the early stages of drafting, and come up with suggestions to help one another. Although each team member has a distinct role, everyone can work together to problem-solve and improve each component of the final presentation.

Activity 2: Write – Discuss

We will continue to draft the written components for our presentations. Our teacher will conference with us, answering questions and advising us as we work.

Independently, continue to draft the written components for your assigned role. Refer to the Presentation Written Components section of the Application Unit Presentation Guide for specific details about each of the required written components.

Refer to the criteria listed in the Culminating Task Checklist to guide your thinking and writing.

Consult with your team members as you draft, and note any questions or concerns to discuss with your teacher during conferences.

Activity 3: Discuss

We will conference with our teacher to get feedback and ask questions as we plan, draft, and revise our presentations.

While your team works during this lesson, your teacher will conference with teams about your plan, drafts, and revisions. Your teacher will also clarify any questions your team might have and will use the Culminating Task Checklist to help you refine your presentation.

As explained in the Presentation Process section of the Application Unit Presentation Guide, decide as a team what you would like to accomplish during your conference and set an agenda that allows you to get the specific feedback you need to keep moving forward.

Activity 4: Write

For homework, each member of our team will finish drafting the written components for their assigned role.

Independently, finish drafting the written components for your assigned role. Refer to the Presentation Written Components section of the Application Unit Presentation Guide for specific details about each of the required written components. Refer to the criteria listed in the Culminating Task Checklist to guide your thinking and writing.

For the next lesson, ensure you have the following completed:

  • The commentators should have complete drafts of their inquiry path and transition.

  • The synthesizer should have complete drafts of the conclusion and bibliography.

  • The moderator should have a complete revised draft of the outline.

  • The technology specialist should have a complete revised draft of the materials and tools list.

All of the written components will be shared, discussed, reviewed, and revised in the next lesson.
