Section 2: Overview

History

We will read Part 2, Chapters 4–6 of the novel In the Time of the Butterflies. We will hear from three of the four sisters between 1949 and 1959. We will explore the biographical and historical literary criticism lenses and consider how they influence the audience’s understanding of the text.

  • Lesson 1:

We will identify, justify, and analyze the best evidence from Part 1 of the novel to support a claim.

  • Lesson 2:

We will read Chapter 5, the first chapter of Part 2 from In the Time of the Butterflies. We will be introduced to the historical literary criticism lens and discuss how reading a text through that lens can impact how the reader understands a text.

  • Lesson 3:

We will analyze Chapter 5, “Dedé, 1994 and 1948,” from In the Time of the Butterflies through the historical lens.

  • Lesson 4:

We will use the historical lens to form and evaluate claims about Chapter 5 of the text.

  • Lesson 5:

We will read the beginning of Chapter 6: “Minerva, 1949” and study the biographical literary criticism lens. Then, we will take details from our reading and analyze them using the biographical lens.

  • Lesson 6:

We will closely read and analyze a section of Chapter 6, “Minerva, 1949,” through the biographical lens.

  • Lesson 7:

We will form evidence-based claims and write an analytical paragraph about Chapter 6: “Minerva, 1949.”

  • Lesson 8:

We will write a well-developed analytical response about Chapters 5 and 6 through either a biographical or historical criticism lens.

  • Lesson 9:

We will review feedback on the Section Diagnostic. We will use the feedback to make revisions to our work.

  • Lesson 10:

We will share the understanding we have gained through our independent reading and continue reading our texts.
