Culminating Task
We will write a literary analysis essay regarding Julia Alvarez’s depictions of the Mirabal sisters through one of the following literary criticism lenses: biographical, feminist, historical, or Marxist. We will reflect on the understanding we have built throughout the unit by engaging in a reflective discussion.
Lesson 1:
We will extend our understanding of the literary lenses in In the Time of the Butterflies.
Lesson 2:
We will analyze a model literary analysis for its content and structure.
Lesson 3:
We will return to our Culminating Task Planning Guide and use the responses we wrote for our diagnostics from Sections 2 and 3 to prepare for our literary analysis essay.
Lesson 4:
We will collect evidence from In the Time of the Butterflies that supports our thesis and begin drafting our literary analysis essay.
Lesson 5:
We will revise and edit the rough draft of our literary analysis essay.
Lesson 6:
We will finish the unit by engaging in a whole-class discussion about what it means to be a revolutionary and how to analyze a text through different critical lenses. We will identify possible pathways to explore for the Application Unit.
Lesson 7:
In a culminating activity, we share the knowledge we have gained and the connections we have made by reading our independent reading texts.
