Section 3: Overview

Money, Power, Respect

We will read Part 2, Chapters 7–8 of the novel In the Time of the Butterflies and explore the Marxist and feminist literary criticism lenses, examining how these lenses impact the audience’s understanding of the novel.

  • Lesson 1:

We will analyze Chapters 5 and 6 through either a historical or biographical lens, working independently to analyze details and their effects on our understanding of the text.

  • Lesson 2:

We will discuss the Marxist lens through the concept of a hierarchy, and we will read the first 15 pages of Chapter 7, “María Teresa, 1953 to 1958,” from In the Time of the Butterflies.

  • Lesson 3:

We will analyze a section of Chapter 7: “María Teresa, 1953 to 1958.”

  • Lesson 4:

We will continue to read Chapter 7: “María Teresa, 1953 to 1958.”

  • Lesson 5:

We will be introduced to the feminist literary criticism lens. We will read a supplementary text and examine that text through a feminist lens to practice our application of the lens.

  • Lesson 6:

We will review what we know about the feminist literary criticism lens and read pages 148–163 of Chapter 8: “Patria, 1959.” We will closely read a passage from this chapter.

  • Lesson 7:

We will reread a section of Chapter 8, “Patria, 1959,” and examine the text for gender, gender roles, and gender stereotypes.

  • Lesson 8:

We will analyze vocabulary words from Chapter 8, “Patria, 1959,” and revisit previously encountered vocabulary words to give them new context.

  • Lesson 9:

We will use In the Time of the Butterflies to learn how to create phrasal adjectives for stylistic effect and clarity in our writing.

  • Lesson 10:

We will write an analytical response about Chapters 7 and 8 through either a feminist or Marxist critical lens.

  • Lesson 11:

We will review feedback on the Section Diagnostic. We will use the feedback to make revisions to our work.

  • Lesson 12:

We will share the understanding we have gained through our independent reading and continue to read our texts.
