FrankensteinCulminating Task

Central Question

What does it mean to be human?

Throughout this unit, we have considered the Central Question in Frankenstein through the examination of several big ideas (pursuit of knowledge, human connection, nature versus nurture, and unintended consequences).

Using your study of the unit’s big ideas, write an expository essay answering one of the prompts below.

  • Option 1: Frankenstein centers on the impact of scientific research and its effect on humanity. Explain how the novel depicts science as a force for good or evil.

  • Option 2: Multiple characters in Frankenstein seek out companionship and love in one form or another. Explain what this says about a human’s need for connection.

  • Option 3: One of the most compelling aspects of the novel is its commentary on the power of nature versus nurture. Explain which element Frankenstein indicates is the stronger force in developing humans.

  • Option 4: Frankenstein is driven in many ways by character interactions and decisions. Explain how these interactions and decisions have unintended consequences throughout the novel.

In your essay, be sure to do the following:

  • State a clear central claim.

  • Organize your essay with a series of supporting claims.

  • Support your claims with strong textual evidence from both the novel and other supplemental texts you have read.

  • Properly cite the textual evidence.

  • Use content and academic vocabulary to support your response where appropriate.

  • Demonstrate command of proper grammar, usage, and punctuation.
