Lesson 5

We have traced Victor Frankenstein’s character development as we read the first few chapters of Frankenstein. To demonstrate our understanding of the novel, we will write responses that outline how Victor’s beliefs about the pursuit of knowledge have shifted using specific details from the text.

Lesson Goals

Reading and Knowledge

  • Analyze Relationships: How well do I recognize and interpret important relationships relating to the development of Frankestein’s ideas about the pursuit of knowledge?
  • Determine Meaning and Purpose: How well do I use connections among the development of thematic ideas and details to make logical deductions about Frankenstein’s views on the pursuit of knowledge?

Writing

  • Gather and Organize Evidence: How well do I gather and organize relevant and sufficient evidence to demonstrate an understanding of Frankenstein to support claims and develop ideas?
  • Form Claims: How well do I develop and clearly communicate meaningful and defensible claims that represent valid, evidence-based analysis of Frankenstein?
  • Organize Ideas: How well do I sequence and group sentences and paragraphs and use structure, evidence, and academic vocabulary to establish coherent, logical, and well-developed explanations of Frankenstein?

Activity 1: Discuss – Read

We will review the notes from our Frankenstein big ideas Note-Taking Tool. Then, we will review the expectations for the Section Diagnostic.

Step 1

With a partner, review your Frankenstein Big Ideas Note-Taking Tool and what you have learned about Victor Frankenstein’s pursuit of knowledge.

Step 2

Review the Section 1 Diagnostic Checklist.

Discuss with your partner how the expectations of this task fit with the notes you have taken. Talk about how to meet the expectations listed on the Section 1 Diagnostic Checklist. Identify questions you have about the task.

In a class discussion, ask clarifying questions so you are ready to begin planning and writing your response to the question.

Activity 2: Write

We will learn how to provide parenthetical citations for the sources of information and quotations we use.

Step 1

Individually, read pages 1-3 of the Integrating Quotations Reference Guide and then respond to the following questions in a whole-class discussion:

  1. What are the two ways to cite evidence in a sentence?

  2. Why is citing evidence important? How does it support your credibility as a writer?

  3. What is included in the parentheses after you cite your evidence? What is that information linked to?

Step 2

Now, look through the rest of the reference guide. As you draft your Section Diagnostics and Culminating Task, you should think strategically about how to present your evidence through either quoting or paraphrasing. It will be important to cite all your evidence with parenthetical citations no matter how you include the evidence. Use the Integrating Quotations Reference Guide for support.

Activity 3: Write

We will plan and begin writing our responses to the Section Diagnostic 1 question.

Begin planning your response by outlining your ideas about how Victor Frankenstein’s beliefs about the pursuit of knowledge have changed throughout the novel thus far.

Be sure to consult the Section 1 Diagnostic Checklist and Frankenstein Big Ideas Note-Taking Tool. Additionally, consult your Vocabulary Journal to include content and academic vocabulary where appropriate in your response.

Activity 4: Write

For homework, we will finish responding to the section 1 diagnostic question.

Finish writing your response to the Section 1 Diagnostic question. You will have the opportunity to revise your response after receiving feedback from your teacher.

Activity 5: Write

We will reflect on our work on the Section Diagnostic and assess how prepared we are for the Culminating Task.

Step 1

Choose at least three of the questions below and respond to them in your Learning Log:

  1. How well did you take necessary action to prepare for the task?

  2. What went well for you during the completion of this task?

  3. What did you struggle with during the completion of this task? How did you push through that struggle?

  4. How well did you actively focus your attention during this independent task?

  5. How well did you develop and use an effective and efficient process to maintain workflow during this task?

  6. What would you do differently during the next Section Diagnostic?

Step 2

Review your Culminating Task Progress Tracker. Think about all you have learned and done during this section of the unit. Evaluate your skills and knowledge to determine how prepared you are for the Culminating Task.

  • Add or refine any skills and content knowledge required for the Culminating Task.

  • Evaluate how well you are mastering skills and knowledge required for the Culminating Task.
