Lesson 7

We will continue to find additional sources and analyze them for relevance, credibility, and bias.

Activity 1: Discuss

We will analyze a pathway text and increase our understanding of a change agent in our pathway.

You will work in research teams to choose or solidify a local change agent. This could be a person or group that had an impact at your school, in your community, in your city, or in your state. Discuss with your research teams some candidates for your local source and finalize your choice of local change agent.

Activity 2: Write

We will implement our protocol for goal setting and evaluation of progress.

Respond to the following questions in your Learning Log:

  1. What do you need to do to succeed on the Culminating Task?

  2. How will you, specifically, contribute to your group?

  3. How will you know you have met your goals at the end of the lesson?

Activity 3: Discuss

We will find a source text about a local change agent. We will analyze the text to determine its relevance and credibility in order to discern its value to our research.

You will work in research teams to find and analyze a second source for your culminating presentation.

Use the guiding questions in the Foundation Unit Research and Presentation Guide or the Assessing Resources Reference Guide to help you evaluate the text for bias and credibility. Record your evaluation on the Potential Sources Tool.

If the text is accepted for credibility and bias, move on to the next activity. If the text is not credible or is biased, find another text and evaluate it for credibility.

Activity 4: Discuss

We will review the source to determine if it helps further our research by addressing our central inquiry question.

If the source on the change agent is viable, review your inquiry questions. Does the source help further your ability to address the inquiry question?

If so, organize your notes on the text so that you can easily incorporate them when creating your presentation and product for the Culminating Task.

If not, continue researching possible sources.

Activity 5: Write

We will answer reflection questions to determine our progress.

In your Learning Log, respond to the following questions:

  1. Did you meet the goals you set at the beginning of the lesson?

  2. How do you know you met your goals? Provide evidence.

  3. How did you, specifically, contribute to your group?

  4. On a scale from one to four, how well do you understand the topic, your research, the texts you read, and the presentation plan?
