Lesson 2

We will organize in subtopic research teams, review what we think and know so far, and plan what we will read, analyze, delineate, and evaluate to extend our understanding in our subtopic.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I effectively focus on the subtopic, perspective, and position I am likely to pursue and explain my thinking to a peer research team?

  • Can I work effectively with a peer research team to collaboratively expand our understanding of a common subtopic area?

Texts

Core

  • Unit Reader

Activity 1: Discuss

We will join a research team with students who are interested in the same subtopic, compare perspectives on the topic, review what we have examined so far, and organize ourselves for further research.

Join a research team with students who are interested in the same subtopic.

Using the explanation you wrote in the previous lesson, explain your understanding of the issue, question, and the perspective you currently have.

Compare your perspective to those of other students on your team.

Identify team members who seem to argue for the issue, those who argue against the issue, and those who are still uncertain or have more nuanced perspectives.

Activity 2: Read – Discuss

In research groups, we will complete a review of the “Artificial Intelligence And Life In 2030” to determine what in the report might be relevant to our study subtopics.

Review the notes and annotations you made on the "Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030.” With your research group, note what sections might be relevant to your subtopic and beneficial in developing your arguments.

Activity 3: Read – Discuss

We will determine what further research we need to do, select and assign texts from the suggested text list, and plan internet research.

Access the supplemental text set handout for your subtopic area. Consider the list of supplemental sources that have been identified for your subtopic.

Determine sources from the list that your team wants to examine and analyze. Identify possible key words for further information searches outside of the list related to the subtopic.

Assign one or more research tasks to each member of the team.

Activity 4: Read – Write

We will individually begin further research. We will also develop a draft question to guide the research and development of our final argument.

Based on your research task designated by your group, analyze an information source or argument related to your subtopic. Summarize what you find and share with your research team.

Considering your subtopic, the focus you are leaning toward, and your developing understanding and perspective, draft a question that sets up the argument you may pursue.
