Lesson 3

We will discuss information and delineate arguments we have individually researched, so other students on our team can use those texts in developing their own arguments.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I work effectively with a peer research team to collaboratively expand our understanding of a common subtopic?

  • Can I generate a controversial question and delineate an argument I have researched, then report what I have learned to my peer research team?

Activity 1: Discuss

In research teams, we will share and compare our draft questions we created.

Rejoin your research team and share your draft questions. Think about how your question relates to the questions developed by other group members.

As a team, develop an overview of where your individual questions might take you as you research and write your arguments. Share what your team has summarized with other teams in the class.

If you have begun to rethink what interests you or which issue you might address, determine whether you want to change to another group or continue with your current research team.

Activity 2: Discuss

In research teams, we will discuss the texts we have read and delineated.

Review the assignments each team member had and the status of each member’s work.

For each research task, report what you have learned so far from the subtopic supplemental texts you have read or other sources. Discuss whether and how your learnings might be used by other students on your research team.

Activity 3: Discuss

Individually, we will determine what information sources or arguments we might use to develop our own arguments and determine if we need to do further research.

Based on your research team’s review discussion, identify possible sources you have either already read or intend to read as you develop your own perspective and argument.

Activity 4: Discuss

In research teams, we will individually report what we determined about our sources and needs for further research. We will discuss if and how the team should engage in further research to provide mutual support.

Report to your team what you have decided so far. As a team, determine if you need to do further collaborative research or whether you might now begin to work more independently.

Activity 5: Read

For homework, we will continue to research our subtopics and questions.

For homework, continue to conduct further research and read additional texts based on your research team’s discussion and decisions.

Write new or interesting words you encounter in your Vocabulary Journal.
